Biography (link to personal blog)
Andrew studied Zoology as a first degree and then obtained an MSc in Marine Biology. He had a spell teaching before experiencing a call to the Methodist ministry. It was during his training that he started writing hymns as a way of exploring theology. Many of his hymns have been incorporated in recent hymn books (including 9 in Singing the Faith) and he has published several collections of his own. Later he developed a more general interest in hymnody which has led to a PhD based on his research.
Residency
Andrew served as Hymn Writer in Residence for our previous series of seminars Science and the Language or Prayer writing a new hymn in response to each talk. He’s agreed to do the same for these webinars and to take responsibility for our closing devotions at each session. The hymns will be published on his blog-site.
There is an example of a hymn he wrote in 2019 inspired by the work of Greta Thunberg at this link.
